Buy Ean
I am just adding my first product onto Amazon and as the manufacturer I need to include an EAN or UPC code. I understand that Amazon suggests going directly to GS1 to get the codes but since I only want just 1 code and not needing many codes, it is extremely expensive to subscribe to GS1UK.

The European Article Number (also known as EAN) is a Global Trade Item Number standard describing a barcode symbology and numbering system. It's used in global trade to identify a specific retail product type, from a specific manufacturer.
The most commonly used EAN standard is the thirteen-digit EAN-13. The EAN barcodes are the international standard used in Europe, Asia and other regions for lookup at retail point of sale and online stores. Accepted by the largest online and retail stores including Amazon, Ebay, AliExpress, Jet, Shopify etc.
There are however a handful of retailers that require you to rent your GTINs. It should be known that GS1 is a private entity and not a government organization. Many of the retailers that require you to rent directly from GS1 are also on their boards.
Step 1: To "register" a bar code: First thing you would do is personally assign the bar codes to your products, this is done by you/your company and you would have to keep your own records of these associations. Many use spreadsheets or their own POS system, either way, we recommend having your records backed up in case your computer crashes.
Step 2: Then you register/record this data at the store it will be sold at. Each store has its own internal, private database (aka: Point Of Sales System). This means that every new store/site you approach won't know anything about your product until you input the data into their private P.O.S. system.

In the last few decades, shopping has really evolved. Previously shoppers all over the world had to do a time-consuming process to check item prices. Manufacturers and resellers went through the same process. Adding prices or tags to each item requires an ample amount of time. Now, things have changed. Perhaps, a huge contrast to what most people experienced in the past decade.
Since the pricing process has changed, the way people shop and sell their products has also changed. Now, customers can leave the store in mere seconds after shopping and receive the bill from the store. The reason behind this is the existence of barcode numbers. A barcode is a product lookup code that is made up of the lines and numbers that you see. There is no information hidden within the barcode. The majority of goods produced by manufacturers and products sold by retailers have a barcode attached to them either directly on the product label or by a sticker. Barcodes are for scanners connected to a computer that reads and tracks the price information of a product. This process enables the seller to make the receipt for the customer in the shortest possible time. Gone are the days when cashiers manually type product prices which used to consume a lot of time and also used to be a hassle for most customers.
When you go to a grocery store or open your refrigerator, chances are you will see that almost every product has a printed UPC barcode. In fact, almost every product in the United States has its own UPC barcode, whatever type of product it may be. So, what are UPC barcodes and what are they for?
Universal Product Codes, or simply known as a UPC, is a 12 digit number that appears on the majority of all United States products. These barcodes were originally intended to help grocery and department stores speed up their checkout process. Also, through these UPC barcodes, grocery stores were able to efficiently keep track of their inventory. The system quickly caught on with all other retail products because of its benefits. UPC barcodes were designed for mass circulation and tracking of products.
How to get a UPC barcode? The first step in getting a UPC barcode is to determine exactly how many different products you have that need a barcode. Companies need different UPC barcodes for each and every product they have. Each barcode must be unique. Keep in mind any time you change something (color, size, scent, shape, quantity, etc.) about your product it then becomes a different product and needs its own barcode number. Once you know how many numbers you need the rest is simple.
The best way to start off if this is your first time making a purchase is to register for a free account. Once you have completed that step, you would then select the number of barcodes you wish to purchase and then go through the checkout process. When your order has been successfully placed, your web browser will automatically be redirected over to your account center on our website where after a very few minutes you will be able to download your order directly from our secure server. Once you have your numbers you can start using them right away!
A UPC barcode does not have any information about your product or the price hidden in it. You will need to provide your barcode number and product information to the stores that will be selling your products so they can manually enter the information into their database. The store is the one responsible for storing UPC barcode information along with the accompanying product price in their point of sale database.
